Phlegethon – a Scandinavian and Cross-Institutional Research Network

Phlegethon is a multidisciplinary and cross-institutional research collaboration involving leading academic and medical institutions from Denmark and Norway.

The name Phlegethon originates from Greek mythology, referring to a river in the underworld. It symbolizes the network’s ambition to uncover underlying currents in the social and political development of the Scandinavian welfare states—currents that shape professional practices within rehabilitation services.

The network’s overarching research theme is the exploration of contemporary societal and political trends in Scandinavian welfare states. These trends often transcend sectors and institutions, influencing the delivery and organization of health and welfare services. Phlegethon focuses specifically on rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke, aiming to illuminate mechanisms that contribute to health inequalities.
